WHAT ARE INSULATED CONCRETE FORMS (ICFs) AND HOW ARE THEY USED
An Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) is highly insulated concrete wall formed using lightweight expanded (EPS) or extruded (XPS) polystyrene foam. Universal ICF are constructed from a combination of rigid PVC, polystyrene foam, and polycarbonate components creating a cavity into which rebar and concrete are placed.
Universal ICF Wall System uses our patented Corners, Rails and Cross-ties to create a concrete form. Rebar is placed at key points within the cavity. The forms are then braced and then concrete is poured into the cavity.
Once the concrete sets, the forms remain in place to provide insulation within the finished wall. This combination of concrete and foam insulation creates a structure that has increased energy efficiency, strength and overall durability.
- The Universal ICF system is extremely versatile. Straight wall, radius walls, 45° walls, window and door openings are all created using the same components. There’s no need to specify exact block placement in the design which is common place amongst our competitors. This results in less work for the designer. Universal ICF has the adaptability to change the R-value of a wall with ease. No additional work is required by the designer.
- Universal ICF has the capability of placing a rim joist directly in the form.
- You can specify any wall height, in any increment and the Universal ICF system easily accommodates that. The need for special blocks or worrying about structural integrity of modified blocks is eliminated.
- If exposed concrete is desired for a given wall section, Universal ICF gives you the recourse of having one or both sides.
- The Universal ICF system may be set in a vertical or horizontal position, depending on application needs.
- The highly visible Universal PVC rail offers an easily accessible attach point for exterior siding and drywall applications; no furring strips needed.
- The Universal ICF system offers the lowest profile cross-tie, which means no concrete hang-up or voids (hollow spots) within the wall cavity. Universal offers the ability to pour faster, set quicker and use larger aggregate, resulting in reduced concrete/pumping costs and less labor.
- All of the Universal ICF components are boxed and palletized for ease of transportation, storage and job-site handling.
- The Universal ICF system supports almost any custom design, including: radius walls, numerous window openings, oversized window or door openings, wall width reduction and more.
- Ledger boards are easily incorporated into the Universal ICF system; simply replace a section of the foam with a standard ledger board.
- COMFORT – Houses built with Universal ICF walls have a more consistent temperature throughout the day and night. They have virtually no “cold spots”, and sharply fewer drafts.
- SOLIDITY – The rigidity of concrete construction reduces the flex in floors and cuts shifting and vibration from the force of the wind or the slamming of a door. Concrete houses survive winds like hurricanes and tornadoes far better than wood homes. And when properly reinforced, they should also withstand earthquakes well.
- SOUND DAMPENING – About one-sixth as much sound gets through a Universal ICF wall compared with an ordinary frame wall. This sharply cuts the intrusion of noise from outside.
- ENERGY EFFICIENCY – The superior insulation, air tightness, and mass of the walls cut the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling by 30-40%. This can save hundreds to thousands of dollars per year in a typical home. In addition, it allows the installation of smaller heating and cooling equipment. That alone can reduce the initial cost of a house by over a thousand dollars.
